This Episode of Season 8…(#809 Flowers by the Ocean - Watch it here now! )is truly one of my favorites of all time… It has one of the most interesting segments- with my Friend Robin van der Schaaf- explaining the amazing Journey that a Lily Bulb makes from the Netherlands- to California… sharing this story was so much fun- and it allowed me to visit two of my Favorite Flower Growers- Ivor and René Van Wingerden and two of their Flower Farming Locations… in Nipomo and Santa Barbara California… it also includes my “brother” - Michael Furlong- who is just like a long lost brother to me… (My Mom only had one son- ME) … and Michael helps me introduce one of Favorite Gerbera Daisy Varieties… The PASTA Gerbera… it’s an Episode about Flowers by the Ocean- Let’s get started!

Up First- is my Friend Robin van der Schaaf- who is a bulb salesman by trade- and he’s here to share the Incredible Journey a Lily Bulb takes - to get grown, harvested and end up in a bouquet in our home… and you may believe all the steps! Robin shares the start in Netherlands- where the lilies are loaded into temperature controlled containers- and then board a ship for trip through the Panama Canal- and then up the coast of California - where they are unloaded and placed into a Cooler in Watsonville… we’ll take you inside that cooler too… then they move out of the cooler- and after de-chilling (is that a word?) they go to Nipomo California to Ivor’s Farm- where they are potted in sterilized soil… we show that process… (one of my Favorite Smells on the Planet)… and then into flats- where they are gently cared for- watered, and grow into beautiful lily buds… that’s when they get harvested- and shipped to the people that will make them into bouquets… it’s an Incredible Journey… and worth the watch! The Next segment is the Joy of Growing Gerbera Daisies with my Flower Friend Ivor Van Wingerden at Ocean Breeze farms- he shares the JOY that comes with Growing Gerberas and shares their sustainable process- and Integrated Pest Management (you’ll find out what that means) and how they harvest them - by pulling and snapping the stem- not with cutters or knives… All the while Ivor’s Trust Sidekick- Rocky is along for the Ride… We Love ROCKY- he tried to hitch a ride back to Michigan with us… but we knew he would never leave IVOR and the Gerberas!

We move down to Santa Barbara- and talk to Generational Flower Farmers- Ivor- and his Father René Van Wingerden… True confession- René is one of my Favorite People in the Whole World… and the first time we met- we spent a day together in his Pick up- and I did the GERBERA PLUNGE into his swimming pool that was filled with Thousands of Gebera Daisies- that is include in this episode… Ivor and René share the story of how René’s Dad- Kase - chose the location for their farm and the process they had searching for the PERFECT SPOT to grow flowers… they found it here in Santa Barbara… it’s amazing!
