Glühwein with Cloved Orange #FlowerCocktailHour

The joy of the feast is such an appealing part of the ghost of Christmas Present, I am inspired to share a recipe for Hot Glühwein. Glühwein is simply wine that is mulled with spices and served hot. While its origins date back to Roman times, it gained prominence in Germany, particularly at Christmas markets, from the 15th century onwards. It is found at Christmas markets throughout Europe and many in the U.S. as well. Red wine is often the the base, however I really enjoy this white wine version. And you can also make use of the cloved Orange!

INGREDIENTS

4 cups or 1 bottle of white wine - Savignon Blanc preferred

1/2 cup orange liqueur- Cointreau preferred

3 Cinnamon sticks

5-7 Allspice berries, whole

4-5 Cloves, whole

Clove-studded Orange (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Combine ingredients in a medium saucepan. Add clove-studded orange if you have one (optional) for added flavor. Bring to a simmer over heat. Let simmer 15 minutes. Carefully taste - consider adding sugar to taste if a sweeter drink is desired. If simmered for longer, the flavors will be stronger. Ladle into mugs and enjoy warm.
